Resurfacing and bridgework - M6 Junction 18, CheshireClient : Highways AgencyConsultants : BabtieDuration of contract : 66 daysValue : £2,784,000
The contract was in two stages.
Stage 1 - a lane rental contract for the removal of 3.5km of the existing bituminous surfacing, resurfacing, replacing the central reservation safety fencing and renewing the drainage ironwork.
Stage 2 - structural work on the five over bridges including waterproofing, resurfacing, minor concrete repairs and replacement of a number of the deck span bearings.
The M6 is an extremely busy motorway, therefore in order to minimise traffic congestion during the reconstruction period, Hanson Construction Projects redesigned the traffic management scheme and was able, through careful planning, to reduce the original five sections down to four. The elimination of this single section reduced the reconstruction time to 37 days (from the original 66 days allowed). Over 90,000sqm of base course and our performance surfacing material Tuffgrip was laid. The road planings were recycled into the rejuvenated central reservation. A continuous concrete beam was design and constructed with socketed foundations to accommodate the posts for the central reserve safety barriers. This provided a neater appearance and saved time in the installation process.
The bridge works called for the removal of the existing surface, waterproofing, the application of a red sand carpet and the resurfacing of the five bridges. Minor concrete repairs were also undertaken and included the waterproofing of the columns and soffits as well as the replacement of two of the deck span bearings. A TVCB (temporary vertical concrete barrier) was installed to protect the bridgework scaffolding and to ensure a safe working environment.Operating a supply chain management scheme ensured that most of the material used in the contract was supplied by Hanson - Premix concrete, aggregates and asphalt. The reconstruction of the motorway was completed ahead of the specified contract period thus minimising the disruption to the motoring public.
