Our business

Hanson Aggregate Marine is the leading supplier of marine aggregates in Europe from a fleet of nine dredgers, backed by some 40 years' experience of trading in international waters.

Based at Southampton, Hanson has major interests in mainland Europe and is Belgium's leading supplier of sand, gravel, ready-mixed concrete and related products.

The fleet supplies more than 30 outlets around Britain, and in mainland Europe from Amsterdam to Le Havre.

Of the 8 million tonnes dredged annually about 10 per cent is supplied to Hanson wharves in Britain, with 40 per cent to external UK customers. Significant volumes - some 50 per cent of sales - is supplied to major contracted outlets and to other wharves in Belgium, Holland and France.

Hanson's marine division was launched in 1968 with the purchase of Seaborne Aggregates, a company whose experience dated back to 1950. Acquisitions continued with Westminster Gravels in 1982, Holms Sand Gravel in 1986, and others in 1989 and 1991. Hanson led the field through a strategic ship building programme during 1986 which heralded a new generation of dredgers. The company has since taken delivery of six state-of-the-art vessels. Hanson purchased Civil & Marine's dredging arm for £72 million in November 1995.
