Bricks used: Ashby Light Buff, Victorian Blues and Diamond Royal Blue (Glazed bricks)
Kings Reach
A residential development of 248 units for Kings Oak. The development comprises seven blocks of various heights located within the setting of Kings Meadow, Reading.
Kings Meadow is symbolic in its connection with the Thames at Reading. The original concept was to evoke an image of a fleet of ships moored at Kings Meadow. This concept has been followed throughout the design and realised in its built form. The unifying elements of curving roof along with the white render at high levels symbolises the sails. The principal elevational material of golden brown brickwork (Hanson's Ashby Light Buff) contrasts well with the lighter roofscape.
The design in relating to the original concepts is successful due to its appropriate application of materials and the choice of brick has contributed to this realisation. Its selection has allowed the architects to introduce elements of scale and texture and plays on the image of a ship's hull in terms of its strength and durability. The brick has also introduced the traditional concept of craft and workmanship to the elevations.
Overall all parties concerned were extremely pleased with the end result and agree that the bricks selected have made a significant contribution to the overall success of the scheme.
