In recent years there has been a tremendous upsurge in demand for natural stone. Architects and specifiers are putting the aesthetic appeal and longevity of natural products ahead of materials such as metal, glass and concrete.

Hanson's expertise in extracting and manufacturing, coupled with significant investments in modern technology and machinery, put the company at the forefront of this developing market.

Our trading division, Hanson Bath Portland Stone, has been involved in the construction of some of the most prestigious buildings in Britain and overseas and is one of the oldest suppliers of natural limestone masonry products in the UK.

We supply quality dimension stone from Bath and the Cotswolds. We operate underground quarries at Corsham near Bath, open cast Cotswold stone quarries at Temple Guiting and Flick in Gloucestershire and masonry works to craft and shape the stone in Keynsham near Bristol.

We provide a full design and manufacture service to private clients, architects and contractors, advising on stone specification and fixing details from planning to project completion. Our in-house team, using leading edge computer technology, enables even the most intricate design details to be reproduced. Every stage of a project is overseen by a hands-on senior manager, ensuring commitment to customers and to the finished product.

Bath stone

Bath stone has been used as a building material since Roman times although its most significant use was in the 18th and 19th centuries when John Wood and Beau Nash developed the classic Georgian city of Bath.

The oolitic limestones of the Cotswold Hills have also been quarried since Roman times. Temple Guiting and Flick quarries supply a comprehensive range of natural stone building and walling products as well as block stone for masons and sculptors.

Our Keynsham masonry works, mid way between Bath and Bristol, has the latest computer controlled CNC saws and profilers. All are maintained to exacting standards to ensure that stones are produced as accurately as possible. Our team of highly skilled machine operators and banker masons ensure stones are manufactured to the highest quality.

Portland and other limestones

Although our interest in quarrying Portland block stone was sold in late 2004 the cutting and masoning of this material still remains very important to our business. Portland masonry production is carried out at our Keynsham factory and as with the Bath stones we are able to offer a full detailing and manufacturing service to clients, architects and specifiers.

We are also experienced in processing many other limestones and would welcome enquiries for any material that you may require.

Please note that we no longer supply Portland stone in raw block form, since the sale of this business in 2004.
