Oldham carriageway improvements

Client: Oldham County Council

Quantity: 1,500 tonnes

Overview: A six-week programme of carriageway improvements on the B6194 Park Road and B6194 Glodwick Road in Oldham under partial road closures and lane closures.

Completed: September 2015

Product used: Durafalt D

The project was carried out in an urban area – partly on very narrow roads under full road closures and the remainder under lane closures. In each case traffic movements were maintained, including the bus route by opening and closing stops as required. Restricted working hours were also adopted to minimise disruption to the network. Hanson’s Durafalt D was chosen as the surfacing material as it provides a durable solution able to cope with the high volume of traffic.

During the six-week programme of work, the team had to provide access for a wedding party and a two-day festival, which resulted in a planned weekend of work being cancelled and rescheduled. There was also a gas leak within the works area and the team coordinated with the client and National Grid to locate, excavate and repair the leak. Despite this, Hanson completed the project with minimum disruption to road users and to the full satisfaction of the client.

The full scope of work included:

  • Traffic management and control
  • Planing
  • Minor civils work, including ironwork adjustment/replacement, kerb re-alignment/replacement and footway reinstatement
  • Carriageway surfacing, lining, high friction surfacing (anti-skid)
  • Installation of speed cushions.
