Highways England Area 12 work package 3 and 4

Client: Aone+

Value: £3.6 million

Form of contract: NEC 3

Overview: Surfacing works on the A64 between Tadcaster and Scarborough.

Products used:

The contract for Area 12 (Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire) was awarded via Highways England’s category management process and the work was undertaken as two separate packages, both of which had to be completed during the winter months due to high traffic volumes at other times of the year.

Package 3 consisted of six individual schemes, all of which were carried out at night to minimise disruption to motorists. The majority of work undertaken in the seven schemes that made up package 4 was also carried out at night although there were some weekend closures to allow for deep patching repairs.

Hanson’s collaborative working approach and input into the planning and coordination of the 13 individual schemes was key to their success. Initiatives included nightly site meetings and walk-throughs prior to each shift starting; weekly programme and progress meetings with Aone+; continuous monitoring of the weather; local parish council liaison regarding weekend road closures; and all laying records instantly transferred to the client using the Hanson iPave tablet.

Sustainability benefits

  • No lost time injuries recorded by Hanson Contracting and all site personnel and managers attended regular health and safety briefings and updates.
  • All planings are recycled back into the road network.
  • All vehicles are fitted with trackers to monitor and record their carbon footprint.
