As part of Highways England’s Smart Motorway Programme, Hanson Contracting secured four individual schemes with Bam Nuttall Morgan Sindall Joint Venture (BMJV). They include all surfacing works associated with the implementation of a concrete central barrier and converting the hard shoulder into a permanent running lane between junctions 16 (Kislingbury) and 19 (Catthorpe) and junctions 16 and 15 (Northampton).

During the course of the work Hanson Contracting also undertook several emergency patching repairs on this section of the network.

Collaborative working was the key to the success of the schemes. Hanson’s team was located within the site offices, which helped with the logistical planning for working in narrow lanes as well as the flexibility needed to accommodate programme changes while working both night and day.

Sustainability benefits

  • No lost time injuries recorded by Hanson Contracting and all site personnel and managers attend regular health and safety briefings and updates.
  • All planings were recycled into asphalt mixes for the project or by BMJV for other ongoing schemes.
  • All vehicles are fitted with trackers to monitor and record their carbon footprint.
  • Hanson and BMJV support for fund raising events for the Northamptonshire Air Ambulance.
