Nuclear Encapsulation

Regen has been used successfully in the encapsulation of waste materials from the nuclear industry. The dense pore structure and increased durability provided by using Regen in concrete made it suitable for manufacturing the concrete drums used for storing nuclear waste.

Hanson Cement’s Technical Development Managers were heavily involved in the mix design for this project’s stringent requirements. A special grout was developed to encapsulate the waste.

In turn, the drums are stored in the Encapsulated Product store at Sellafield, a purpose-built structure which utilized a 70% Regen mix in the concrete.

Collaboration between BNFL and Hanson Cement has resulted in a unique mix design being developed for the nuclear industry.
