Bulk construction aggregates

Bulk aggregates for construction

Hanson is one of the UK’s largest suppliers of bulk aggregates for construction. We supply bulk construction aggregates for a range of core applications, from fill materials to aggregates that can be used in concrete, precast concrete, asphalt and for surface dressing.

Bulk construction aggregates available:

Crushed rock

Hanson's quarries supply crushed rock for a range of construction uses. We produce everything from fill materials through to single-sized aggregates for use in products such as ready-mixed concrete and asphalt. Our strategic network of quarries in the UK is supported by a network of wharves and rail-linked depots to ensure we can supply contracts of any size across the country.

Sand and gravel

Hanson is the UK's leading producer of sand and gravel from a network of over 30 quarries and a marine dredging business.  Much of the material we produce is used in the manufacture of ready-mixed or precast concrete at our own plants. We also sell sand and gravel to other precast and ready-mixed concrete manufacturers. We produce specialist and industrial sands for a range of uses from glass making and water filtration to horticulture and leisure.

Fill materials

Hanson can supply a wide range of aggregates which are suitable for use as  fill materials in a variety of construction applications.

Concrete aggregates

Hanson has extensive experience in supplying high quality aggregates for concrete and ready-mixed concrete across the UK. We can supply a wide range of coarse, fine and blended aggregates in accordance with BS EN 12620 (Aggregates for Concrete) and PD 6682: 1 (Guidance on the use of BS EN 12620.)

Asphalt aggregates

Hanson’s aggregates are used by the main asphalt suppliers throughout the UK. We can supply coarse  and fine aggregates in accordance with BS EN 13043 (Aggregates for Bituminous Mixtures and Surface Treatments for Roads, Airfields and Other Trafficked Areas) & PD 6682-2 (Guidance on the Use of BS EN 13043).  Aggregates are available in a range of polished stone values and geological types in order to produce a wide range of asphalt products.

Precast concrete aggregates

Hanson’s high quality aggregates are used extensively in precast concrete products across the UK. We can offer a range of aggregate types dependant on the product specification.

Surface dressing

We offer a range of aggregates suitable for surface dressing. Our surface dressing aggregates are supplied in accordance with BS EN 13043 (Aggregates for Bituminous Mixtures and Surface Treatments for Roads, Airfields and Other Trafficked Areas) & PD 6682-2 (Guidance on the Use of BS EN 13043). We supply aggregates that meet BS EN 12271 with UK guidance found in PD 6689. All of our aggregates are CE marked and we hold have the responsible sourcing standard BES 6001.

Railway ballast

Hanson can supply railway ballast, generally this consists of a durable and wear resistant igneous rock, such as granite, with large (40-50 mm size) angular pieces that lock together. Because of the way igneous rock is formed it is highly resistant to pressure and does not break easily. Our railway ballast is produced in accordance with BS EN 13450 (Aggregates for Railway Ballast) and is backed up by rigorous quality control testing by our technical team.

including the intended application, type and quantity of the aggregate you require. The first step is to work out what type of aggregate you need, along with how much you need for your project, while considering any special requirements, for example, the polished stone value (PSV) needed if using the aggregate for use in asphalt. Our support and customer services teams are on hand to help, so feel free to reach out to us for assistance at any stage in your planning process.

What size aggregate is used for road construction?

Aggregate sizes most commonly used for road construction and maintenance include; 125mm or below for foundation or capping layers and typically 31.5mm or below for use in granular sub bases (typically 31.5mm or below) However, asphalt typically contains aggregates between 31.5mm and 6mm while, in surface dressing, used to extend the live of the road carriageway, aggregate sizes typically used are between 4mm and 10mm.
