A career with Marine

Cadets

Hanson Marine supports cadets from an organisation called SSTG, which organises all aspects of the recruitment and training process for new Merchant Navy entrant seafarers. The cadets go through specialist training at marine college/university and at sea. Hanson Marine offers sort-after berths for completion of the sea time required for these SSTG deck and engine cadets. Cadets work alongside our officers on board one of our six dredger vessels, which employ over 100 crew, developing a raft of practical and technical skills to help them gain their professional STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping for Seafarers) qualification.

We can accommodate around 10-12 cadets a year on board our vessels, each usually on board for a six-week period. The training officers on board are always given excellent feedback and some cadets have been employed by Hanson Marine on completion of their training and go on to gain promotion within the company.

Career progression

From an Officer of the Watch certificate, which is gained from the cadetship, it can typically take a further five to six years to achieve a senior rank with the required higher level STCW qualification and promotion.

Hanson Marine recognises the mutual benefit of career progression within the company by offering a study leave programme to crew with ‘company assisted training’ to gain their next international STCW qualification enabling them to be promoted to the next rank on board.
