Committed to reaching net zero carbon by 2050

Heidelberg Materials UK committed to reaching net zero carbon

Heidelberg Materials UK makes essential materials to build our future and reaching net zero carbon by 2050 is a responsibility we take very seriously.

We are committed to fulfilling our role in meeting the UK government’s ambitions and our parent company, Heidelberg Materials, has signed the Business Ambition for 1.5ºC Commitment and joined the UN’s Race to Zero campaign.

Our route to decarbonisation has been ongoing for many years and we have made significant headway. We have a roadmap in place, which includes a number of important areas that will help us achieve net zero. These include:

  • Increased use of alternative raw materials and alternative fuels
  • Carbon capture and storage
  • Fuel switching to hydrogen
  • Use of reduced CO2 products
  • Improvements in plant efficiency and processes across our operations.

Hanson Aggregates

Heidelberg Materials produces both primary and secondary aggregates from a network of quarries across the UK.

Aggregates (crushed stone, sand and gravel) are produced in hardstone quarries, sand and gravel pits and dredged from the sea floor.

They are used directly as an end-product in their own right, for example as a fill material, or indirectly as a raw material in the manufacture of other vital construction products such as ready-mixed concrete, concrete products, asphalt and mortar.

Asphalt

Asphalt is durable, 100% reusable and recyclable.

Asphalt is one of the world’s most recycled materials. It is used as the surface for 95 per cent of our roads – as well as for playgrounds, footways, car and lorry parking areas, airport runways and much more – it is uniquely versatile. It is also an essential material for ensuring the safe and efficient transportation of goods and people on motorways and local roads across the country.

Our high-quality solutions have been developed to be the ideal choice for a wide range of applications, from major civil engineering projects to domestic driveways and footpaths.

Hanson Concrete

Ready-mixed concrete is the most widely used building material in the world and is essential to society and a cornerstone of our built environment.

Ready-mixed concrete is flexible, versatile, durable and strong, allowing designers and suppliers to work together to specify a solution that is individually optimised for each project and its exact requirements.

Modern society would not be possible without concrete. It is used in a wide variety of applications including housing, commercial buildings, road building and essential infrastructure projects such as bridges, tunnels and airports as well as energy and water plants.
