2014 was the best year for our business since the start of the financial crisis in 2008 as construction activity continued to increase and demand for our products rose. Third round of Quarry Life Award gets underway

Hanson UK has launched the third round of its biennial biodiversity research competition, the Quarry Life Award. The competition is run by Hanson’s parent company HeidelbergCement in more than 20 countries across Europe, Africa and Asia. It has been recognised as an official project as part of the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity and offers academics and students from universities and further education institutions the chance to win over €30,000 (£22,000) by finding new ideas for the conservation and promotion of biodiversity in quarries. Hanson Cement fleet claims FORS gold again

Hanson Cement has maintained its FORS gold award, demonstrating that its 193-strong fleet operates to the highest standards. The Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme is a voluntary certification aimed at ensuring operators work lawfully and to best practice.  Companies are assessed annually and the scheme covers management, vehicles, drivers and operations. “This FORS gold award demonstrates that we take safety and compliance extremely seriously,” said Matthew Barlow, supply chain director. “It is testament to the commitment of our team that we have maintained this top level of accreditation.”

Bee-eaters breed in Hanson UK quarry in Cumbria

Two pairs of rare bee-eaters have set up home and are raising chicks at a Hanson UK quarry in Cumbria. The bee-eaters are residing at Low Gelt sand quarry near Brampton in the North Pennines, where they have made nests by burrowing tunnels in the quarry banks. They were discovered by the quarry foreman who noticed the colourful birds flying amongst the site’s colony of nesting sand martins. Hanson UK alerted the RSPB who quickly set up 24 hour nest protection programme in June. The RSPB has now set up a viewpoint on the perimeter of the quarry, offering visitors excellent views of the birds....
