Graduates and apprentices welcomed

We have welcomed our 2023 intake of graduate management trainees and higher apprentices into the Heidelberg Materials family.

The 21-strong team – 11 graduates and 10 apprentices – took part in a three-day induction event. They were welcomed by CEO Simon Willis, who gave an overview of the business and the outlook for the year ahead before answering questions.

The new starters also heard from a range of business functions, took part in teambuilding exercises and were given a presentation by construction mental health and wellbeing charity Mates in Mind.

Our graduate management programme aims to develop the future leaders of our business by providing skills training in specific business lines and awareness of other areas across the company. This year’s intake will be training in aggregates, asphalt, cement, concrete, finance and on new programmes based in marine and at our customer service centre.

Our three-year higher apprenticeship in mineral products technology is run in partnership with the University of Derby with the option of a top-up to a BSc (Hons) Minerals Management degree.

Chris Thomas, a new recruit on the graduate scheme, said: “It’s a really good opportunity with a good company. I did my university placement year in an engineering management graduate role here. I really enjoyed it, going to different places and meeting a lot of people.

“I’m really looking forward to getting down to the quarry and learning how asphalt is made. I want to get around as much as I can and see different sites and parts of the company to broaden my knowledge on everything. I feel good about my future. We will see where it all takes me.”

Applications for next year’s intake will open on 17 November 2023. Find out more about our graduate and apprenticeship programmes here.
