Health, safety and wellbeing in action

Incident reporting

In 2020 we implemented a system of increased incident awareness and reporting within Intelex to drive changes to improve health and safety standards. The number of potentially fatal incidents (PFI), lost time injuries (LTI), total case injuries (TCI), significant near hits, and the number of incidents requiring investigation have all shown improvement since 2018. The only increase is in the average number of days to close an investigation which is thought to be due to improved root cause analysis giving a more thorough understanding of underlying causes, which are shared companywide via health and safety alerts.

Health and wellbeing specialist

As part of our commitment to supporting our employees, we have appointed Tracey Middleton-Lee to the new role of health and wellbeing specialist. The role has been created to better promote, support, and develop our health and wellbeing initiatives. Tracey will coordinate our mental health programme, which aims to provide help to our employees as and when they need it.

Mental health matters

Mental health first aid has become a primary intervention for Hanson. Training for employees to become mental health first aiders was first introduced in 2019, and there are now over 220 across the business.  They are trained to recognise signs of mental ill health, reassure, and respond, even in a crisis, and signpost to the support needed. They provide help both in person and via Teams. All the executive team are mental health first aid trained, and there is even a waiting list for colleagues due to the huge demand and desire to help others.

Fleet award

We were awarded the FORS (Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme) gold accreditation for the 11th successive time.

FORS is a voluntary accreditation which aims to raise the level of quality within fleet operations and demonstrate which operators are achieving exemplary levels of best practice in safety, efficiency, and environmental protection.

The gold award is only given to those that meet the exacting safety and compliance standards.

Hanson Contracting

Hanson Contracting has joined industry body Safer Highways, which aims to keep health, safety, and wellbeing at the forefront of the highways industry and to help drive awareness, strong leadership, effective communication, and best practice across all levels in our sector.

Health and Safety Awards

We won two Mineral Products Association awards for our commitment to health and safety. We claimed top spot in the Safer Management of Pedestrians and Transport on Site and the Safer Together categories.
